Matriarch of Mendel’s: Naomi Silverman

Ever since 1968, Naomi Silverman’s family – and now she herself – have been bringing art supplies and good vibes to the neighborhood at their store, Mendel’s at 1556 Haight. Thanks for keeping the Haight community creative, Naomi!

Haight Street Voice: What can we do to help enhance the neighborhood?

Naomi Silverman: This is a living, breathing neighborhood. I think so many people think of it as just a place for tourists to visit. I know there are stores that cater to that, but we also need to remember there are people who live in the neighborhood, and we as merchants need to provide things that they need and want. They are loyal!      We have to find a way to be respectful of each other and peacefully co-exist. If there are places where we can help out each other, that is what we should be doing!

As one of the longest-standing businesses, customers come in and say, “I used to come here as a little kid and now I’m bringing in my children here!” I think that’s really important!
